Thank you for using your platform for this, Rutger!!! This is the piece I’ve been waiting for someone with reach to write. 🙏 The climate denial parallel is spot on and it hits hard.

Where I feel stuck: I agree with your three solutions, but I fear our democratic institutions are simply too slow for the timeline you’re describing. If capabilities double every 3 months (soon even faster…) and legislation takes 3 or more years, the math doesn’t work…. I hope I’m wrong. 🫠

So my honest question: what can each of us actually do? Right now I feel like a deer in headlights - aware of what’s coming, unable to move. A total freeze response - especially as European seeing my values getting smashed. And I suspect millions of people feel the same way but don’t have the words for it yet.

It’s not possible to change facts. An AI LLM does not think. It is a probabilistic outcome engine. There are a lot of fraudulent communications pretending that an AI LLM has done things that were really just a function of work done by real humans. Of course it’s useful. But someone who does not code and is not technical is not in a position to comment on the reliability or resolve or quality of AI LLM coded output. People who code are. They identify good use cases. For example for generating a POC. But for resilient, durable, enterprise code? Forget it. For finding out errors in code? Yup - can be brilliant. But only with the oversight of a knowledgeable coder. Intelligent people are capable of becoming deluded and even developing psychosis because of the compelling and sycophantic way that AI communicates. I’m sorry, I disagree re the thesis above re AI LLMs. They don’t work like that. Other architectures may well. But that’s another story. Listen to people who know what they are talking about - e.g. Demis Hassabis.
